The Attitude That Can Make a Difference

You’re not alone if you’ve been having a tough time trying to hold on to a happy view of things lately. I don’t have to tell you that it isn’t easy to pick yourself up simply by putting a smile on your face and thinking about lollipops and moonbeams these days. But something I can tell you is that you, and you alone, have a lot more control of your outlook on things than you think.  The control I am talking about is the control you have over your own attitude.

Certainly, things might influence your attitude at any given time. But, psychologists agree, you are the one who decides what attitude to adopt and operate with.

Try this: after climbing out of bed tomorrow morning, decide on the attitude you would like to have for the day. As you finish dressing yourself and are just about to buckle your belt or tie your shoelaces, consider yourself as sinching up and securing the attitude you’ll carry with you through the entire day. It might be a cooperative attitude, a plain and simple positive attitude, or the one I most prefer—an achieving attitude. I like the achieving attitude because with an achieving attitude there is an emphasis on doing things just a little bit better than is expected with the sole purpose of adding value. I find that adopting an achieving attitude gives me an extra boost—an incentive to make sure that I’m focusing on things within my control and ways to go one step better than I initially thought. I add a “Wouldn’t it be better if I just did this?” to get a slightly better outcome. Operating with an achieving attitude gives me a focus aimed at improving things, even in small ways. I find that personally gratifying during these challenging times.

So, give it a try…take control of your attitude!
