Sure, Texts and Emails Can Save Time…But a One Minute Phone Call Might Save $$$!

We’ve all heard the expression that “time is money.” I’d like to add “the poor use of time costs you money.” The other day I was reminded of just that when delegating an editing task to a remote employee whom I had presumed had the necessary background information and context to edit a follow-up report. He in turn presumed what I wanted him to do; so, he didn’t think to ask any questions. As it happened, the final end-product wasn’t what I had expected.

In hindsight, it was obvious to both of us that we would have saved a lot of time if we had simply scheduled a short phone call to go over my expectations regarding the assignment. Completing tasks a second time because it wasn’t communicated clearly the first time is a huge time waster. Besides, it’s a big energy drainer!

It’s ironic that emails and text messages designed to “save time” can cost us time if those involved are working with assumptions rather than understandings. My advice when dealing with task assignments is to take that extra step to speak by phone or simply leave a voice message to ensure that there is alignment of understanding. Not only will it save time, but it will also save money.
